34th Canadian Medical and Biological
Engineering Conference (CMBEC34)

The Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society is Canada's principal society for engineering in medicine and biology.  It is affiliated with the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE).
With Canadian dignitaries in attendance, rehab-themed balloon art, a Broadway singer, and more than a thousand attendees: this was not the usual CMBES conference!

This year’s conference event was held in downtown Toronto, as part of the Festival of International Conferences on Caregiving, Disability, Aging and Technology. O ur association with this high profile conference was a particular delight to our members specializing in rehabilitation research, but everyone found some benefit from the scale of the organization and event.  Our programs proved to be popular, with traditional CMBES attendees plus “cross-over” attendees from other conferences.

The Academic Program was well-attended through the event, with great sessions on the latest biomedical engineering research, including the award-winning student papers:

1. Ehsan Salamati – Estimation of the Orthotropic Elastic Properties of
    the Rat Eardrum
2. Jason Motkoski – Lasers on Robots
3. Jonathan Boivin – Radiochromic Film Dose Measurements During
    Diagnostic CT Examination on Patients

The overall best paper was awarded to Nathaniel Hamming of the University Health Network for his paper Automatic Image-to-World Registration Based on X-Ray Projections in Cone-Beam CT.

There were many special invited speakers in the CE stream, addressing a wide variety of key topics, including BMET education & certification, benchmarking, implementing IEC 80001, software as medical devices, patient safety, and a new “open mic” feature session.

The two keynote speakers were brilliant, with challenging and informative in-depth presentations from renowned clinician and researcher Dr. Peter Kim of SickKids Hospital, and accomplished researcher Dr. Rangaraj Rangayyan from the University of Calgary.

CMBES held an awards reception where we honoured three bright Canadian lights: Dr. Orest Roy (Emeritus), Murray Greenwood of Trillium Health Centre and BMET Certification (Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Technologist), and Dr. Ezra Kwok of the University of British Columbia (Outstanding Biomedical Engineer).

Many thanks to this year’s organizing committee!

Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering Special Issue - Manuscript Submissions Welcome

To celebrate the success of CMBEC34, the Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering is pleased to announce a special issue on the "Innovations in Clinical Devices".  We invite you to submit a manuscript to a special issue. This is an open Call for Papers; however, authors who have presented at CMBEC34 will be given priority to publish in this issue.  Manuscripts must be extended beyond the scope of the CMBEC34 conference proceedings.

Additional details regarding this opportunity can be found here and at the Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering website (under Call for Papers Special Issues).

We would ask that you please pass along this notice to your colleagues. We look forward to your submissions.
